Jesus Statue, Dili, Timor Leste
Aerial photo of one of Timor Leste's icons. This statue overlooks Dili Harbour and the capital itself. Takes 477 vertical steps to reach but the views are worth it.

Hi Tash, Thanx for your comment. The story is this:

I was hanging out the left hand side door (door was missing) of a NZ Air Force Iroquois helicopter by one small strap. I was returning from an inspection of IDP camps with a young lady from the UN HQ in Dili. It is the Jesus Statue on the eastern end of Dili Harbour. There are 477 vertical steps to get up there (I walked it the day after the photo) and of course the same number back again but it is easier on the way down. The pilot did two fly-arounds so I could get a good shot, which I am haapy to say I think I did. It is a smaller statue similar to the famous Rio de Janiero statue of Jesus Christ. It is spectacular though in it's own right. On the western end of Dili, beyond the airport, I had a small part to play in the positioning of a 6 metre tall brass statue of Pope John II which is so positioned that each statue face one another. As you can see, the waters surrounding Dili are clear, inviting, and full of fish. It is a beautiful country of very friendly people, right on our doorstep - just about an hour from Darwin by air.

Hey Rick, this pic is pretty spectacular! Were you in the air or on land to take this?
